What’s the SCOOP? Retelling Chart

By thisreadingmama 2 Comments

Retelling stories is a skill that not all children possess naturally. Some like to retell every single detail, while others leave out important information to the story. That’s why using a retelling chart or organizer is helpful.

When it was time for my Kindergartner and 1st grader to work on retelling this school year, I came up with a new ice cream-themed retelling chart {find even more resources in our pack} that I call What’s the SCOOP?

What’s the SCOOP? Retelling Chart

The acronym SCOOP reminds kids that they need to include:

  • Setting
  • Characters
  • Oh no! (the problem)
  • Order of Events
  • Problem Solved (solution)

And to top it all off, the organizer includes each story element on ice cream scoops! The kids were so excited to use it, which made me even more excited to share it with you. {To get the free printable retelling chart, click on the oval button towards the end of this post.}

Books that Have a Clear Problem and Solution Text Structure complied by This Reading Mama

Before you use the retelling chart, you want to be sure you pick a story that has a clear problem and solution structure to it. Not all fiction books do. To find some, visit my book list that includes some of our favorite books that have this problem-solution structure.

I picked The Stray Dog by Marc Simont. The first time through, we just read it for enjoyment. The kids predicted what might happen as we read. And we did lots of inferring, as this book has several pages with lots going on in the images. Love it!

After we read it, we used the acronym SCOOP to retell the story together. We talked about each part of SCOOP. MBug {Kindergarten} especially loved the “Oh no!” scoop. 🙂

using cooperative learning mats to retell a story

The next day, I re-read the story. I printed off the cooperative work mats {only found in the large pack} and they worked hard to fill in each scoop. Then we stacked our ice cream scoops and retold the story together.

Of course, we’ll do this again several times with other stories, using other activities within the bundle pack. We’ll probably even use the same activities for writing stories! For now, each child has a retelling chart above their desk to help them remember what the five ice cream SCOOPs are for retelling a story. FUN!

Included in our Story Retelling Pack are even more What’s the SCOOP? resources! including:

  • a retelling chart for older learners,
  • wall posters,
  • cooperative learning mats,
  • a matching game,
  • bookmarks,
  • and activity pages to help kids remember how to retell a story.
