I created some homophone posters to hang in our schoolroom to serve as reminders for my kiddos when they write.

If you’ve taught kids, you’ve seen it before:
- “There house is new.”
- “Your my best friend.”
- “It’s shell is hard.”
Homophones matter.
It seems that the there/their/they’re, your/you’re, and the it’s/its are the trickiest ones for kids to remember. To tell the truth, I’ve seen plenty of adults confuse them as well!
As my kids write, I wanted them to have a quick reference to these tricky homophones. So, I created some simple homophone posters to post above the window in our schoolroom.
Each homophone poster contains the word, the purpose for using the word, and a picture/use of the word in a phrase. They include:
- THERE {tells where} – “over there”
- THEIR {shows belonging} – “their house”
- THEY’RE {they are} – “they’re reading”
- YOU’RE {you are} – “you’re sad”
- YOUR {shows belonging} – “your bike”
- IT’S {it is} – “it’s sunny”
- ITS {shows belonging} – its shell”
Even though my kiddos are now in upper elementary, middle school, and high school {Where did my babies go!?!}, I know they’ll be using these homophone posters quite a bit.
I think visuals are good to serve as reminders. But you have to be picky about them. You don’t want your walls too cluttered with visuals because kids can get distracted by them. To know what to put up, I always think about what my kids need as reminders and what their developmental needs are.

Thank you so much for these homophone posters. They are excellent resources to reinforce correct usage and right on time. I am teaching a writing class this summer, so these will be perfect wall posters. In addition, I will reduce the size, so my students can have them as references in their writing binders. I truly appreciate your generosity and sharing of relevant resources.
So glad to hear how these will help in your class! Great idea
