This Word Parts Visual for prefixes, base words, and suffixes is a new addition to our homeschool room this year based on my 5th grader’s request.
*The free printable visual set can be found by scrolling to the bottom and clicking on one of the teal download buttons. Please note there are TWO download buttons. The first uses the train colors you see in this post. The second download button uses green for the prefix, yellow for the base word, and red for the suffix, which are the colors Orton-Gillingham uses.
Word Parts Visual {Prefixes, Base Words, & Suffixes}
In order for learners to understand how to break apart longer words into smaller chunks for easier reading and spelling, we want to help them recognize that many words have word parts called prefixes, base words, and suffixes. {I’m sharing several resources at the end of this post that you can use to help you implement this with your learners.}
But one of the things that learners with language-based learning differences struggle with is that they often can’t remember the meaning of “prefix,” “base word,” or “suffix” when you’re discussing the word parts.
So we can use these terms until we’re blue in the face, but the meaning of those terms doesn’t always connect with our learners. This was the case with my daughter {5th grade}.
Enter our very simple train visual for word parts. It can serve as a great reminder to the vocabulary terms when referencing the parts of words.
Visuals are some of my absolute favorite teaching tools! Visuals build our learners’ confidence, reduce their anxiety, and boost independence as learners have a resource to refer to when they need it. This is why I have SO many printable visuals and charts on my blog!
In these free sets, you’ll find two different sizes in blackline & color. You’ll also find one set with “base word” and another set with “root word,” depending on the term you wan to use with your learners.

This is a wonderful visual reminder for how affixes and base words work together. Thank you for making it and sharing it. It also ties right in with the resources my fourth graders been using to practice this very skill. Perfect tie-in! Thanks again!
