What are Base Words?
Base words are complete words that can stand alone. For example, read is a base word.
Base words can have affixes added to them. The prefix re can be added to the beginning of read to make reread. Suffixes can also be added to base words. The suffix ing can be added to read to make reading. A prefix and suffix can be added to read make rereading. Again, all the words, read is the base word.

Base Words Clip Cards
In order to use the base words clip cards, just print off on cardstock, and laminate. Learners read the word and clip the base word. I highly recommend the wooden clothespins because they are a little sturdier than the plastic ones.
Twenty base words clip cards are included for different four kinds of base words for a total of 80 free cards!
The blue deck includes base words that stay the same. The orange deck includes base words in which the silent e is dropped. The yellow pack includes base words in which the y is changed to i before adding the suffix. Lastly, the green deck includes base words where the last consonant has to be doubled before adding the suffix. {See the image above for examples.}
Because there are three choices at the bottom of each card, these clip cards provide a little more support for struggling readers.
Don’t want to use these as clip cards? Use them as task cards instead! Just laminate them and ask learners to use dry erase marker to circle the base word.
Want self-checking cards? Just add a smiley face or a star on the backside of the cards that lines up with the answers. That way, learners can flip over the clip cards and check their answers.
