Color the Prefixes Worksheets
Prefixes are word parts that are added to the front of base words that change the meaning of a word. Take for example the word happy. If you add the prefix un– before happy, the word becomes unhappy. The meaning has been changed to not happy.
Recognizing how prefixes and base words work together to form longer words is a great strategy for reading longer words. Not only that, learning about prefixes is a FANTASTIC way to work on vocabulary!!
Included in this color the prefix pack are pages for re-, un-, ex-, in-, mis- dis-, plus four mixed review pages.
The single prefix pages have the meaning of the prefix at the top right.
Learners color the prefixes first using marker or highlighters first,
then learners read the words aloud.
For struggling readers, this sequence is important. While you might be tempted to have struggling learners read them before they color the prefix in, I urge you to let them highlight first. This makes the prefixes really “pop” out, making it easier to distinguish the prefixes from the base words.
After all the words have been read, talk about the prefix and how it changes the meaning of the word. For example, you may say, “Restart. That means to start again. Rewrite. It means to write again.” Some words may be a little more abstract like remind. Don’t be afraid to look up these words in a dictionary together to see how they fit.
Once learners have worked some on the individual pages, go for some mixed review! {The hyphens have been fixed in the download. They all come AFTER the prefix.}
To do these, first learners color code the prefixes up at the top right.
Then, they follow their color code to color in the prefixes on the page.
The mixed review pages do not include the meaning of each prefix, so you’ll need to work with learners to help them figure a few of them out. Once the review pages have been colored and read, ask learners to tell you what each prefix means. Or have learners flip on the back and write the meanings.
