Rote Counting Wall with Sentence Strips

By thisreadingmama 4 Comments

Our rote counting wall has been a staple in our schoolroom for several years now.

And it’s been amazing to watch how quickly my kids have learned their multiplication facts by first learning to rote count {or often called skip counting}!

Rote Counting Wall

To create your own large rote counting wall, just take sentence strips {I used different colored strips to make each row “pop.”} Write your numbers on each strip. Then post them under each other on a wall.

When working with learners on skip counting, I recommend starting with the easier, more common ones first, like 10, 2, and 5. I’ve also found that 7 is a great next one because it helps learners understand calendar math when it comes to days related to weeks.

Practicing skip counting is something learners can do on their own. You can provide fun pointers for them to use. My learners practice a strip several days in a row on their own {as a part of their independent work}.

They are encouraged to create their own song or rap to help them memorize a particularly difficult strip. {There are also some great songs on YouTube!}

Once they know it by heart, they begin to recite it to me without looking. I ask them to do this five times successfully before I consider a strip “mastered”}. This has really helped them transition to repeated addition and multiplication. For example, knowing how to count 7, 14, 21… helps learners solve 7 x 3.

Free Rote Counting Page

If you don’t have the wall space for a rote counting wall, feel free to download our FREE rote counting page {in color and blackline} at the end of this post. This page comes from our Rote Counting Pack for Numbers 1-12.

      Aw, you are SO kind to leave such a sweet comment. I’m not sure my mind is that brilliant. It feels more like crazy and confused most days-ha! I’m so blessed to hear that you can use the resources for your learners. Have a great day!

    Very practical question…what did you use to affix the sentence strips to the wall? Are they laminated? Thanks so much!

      Mine are taped to the wall and they’re not laminated. I do wish they were though!
