Positional Word Flashcards
First, what are positional words? Positional words are vocabulary words that refer to an object’s position in relation to other objects. Understanding the concepts related to positional words is vital for both oral language and listening comprehension.
For example: There’s a countertop full of cups. Someone says to you, “Hey, will you grab my cup? It’s beside the red cup.”
- If a child doesn’t understand the concept of beside, and he/she is being told to grab a specific cup from the counter, it will be difficult for the child to know which cup to get. This is receptive language.
- Consequently, if a child doesn’t understand the concept of beside, it would be difficult for him/her to tell someone else to grab the specific cup. This is expressive language.
Positional words are used all day long in every context to communicate meaning to others. These are important words for our kids and learners to understand!

The majority of the positional word flashcards in this pack include simple images of a ball and its relationship to other objects. I encourage you to use sentences when demonstrating the words and their meaning. For example, “The ball is on the desk.” or “The ball is in the box.”
The cards include these concepts/words*: on, off, in, out, above, under/below, behind, in front, beside (left), beside (right), between, through, near, far, around, upside down, over, bottom, top, before, after, beginning/first, next/middle, last/end.
*Psst! Many of these words are opposites, so they integrate very well when teaching opposites.
If you don’t love the idea of using flashcards, integrate them with games like these:
