A little background…
My daughter, now in 2nd grade, went to a part-time school for half of last school year. The pace of the phonics program they used was too fast for her {not to mention, it wasn’t my favorite}. We spent much of the last half of the year filling in gaps.
And while she did make progress, I felt we needed to back up and start some things over, especially after summer break. It’s not worth it to jump ahead because I want her foundation for phonics to be rock solid.
Because she really needs extra support as a reader, we are using All About Reading Level 2 with her this year. You know I love to create things and it won’t be all we do, but I really do love All About Reading‘s design for struggling readers!
Phonics Dice Games for Blends and Digraphs
We are going back to short vowel words with blends and digraphs, which she still struggles with from time to time. So, I created some quick and easy phonics dice games for blends and digraphs.
These are NO PREP, easy-to-play games. I listened to her read the words as she played them, but if you’re using them as a review, learners could play them independently.
There are 4 free phonics dice games included:
1- Words with Blends only at beginning OR end (level 1)
2- Words with Blends at the beginning AND end (level 2)
3- Words with Digraphs at the beginning OR end
4- Words with Blends & Digraphs at beginning AND end
My daughter tends to guess at words based on letters towards the end of the word instead of slowing down to start at the beginning. For example, she may say SOFT instead of frost. So I drew a reminder dot/arrow to help her focus on starting at the beginning.
If you use counters, you can make them reusable, even for the same learner. We used counters the first time and dot paint the second time. But you could also just have learners color in the boxes after they read the words.
