FREE IT Word Family Reader & Activities
Each week, I am including 4 freebies from each lesson of Learn to Read: 1- a reader, 2- word family puzzles, 3- Rainbow Roll & Write, and 4- Roll, Read, & Find. I also like to share pictures of my daughter in action with many of the other resources from the Unit.
The IT reader is called Where Are They? and features several IT words plus the two new sight words, are and they. {The sight words included are beginning sight words from list A or B of my printable sight word lists.} I print the pages off front and back {short ways} and then staple them together with my long-arm stapler.
The IT puzzles are a great way to get kids sounding through words: S-I-T. And, of course, the picture provides great support so they know they’ve sounded out the right word.
The Rainbow Roll & Write page is a go-to on our first day. I love that it’s no prep. I encourage her to spell the word out loud each time she writes it and then say the word. We often chant the words with our animal sight word chants or our people sight word chants, too.
The Roll, Read, & Find is a favorite of mine. It gets learners reading with fluency, as they review sight words, practice their new ones, read their word family words, and work on handwriting {if your learner traces the words}. Lots of learning objectives squeezed into one activity! Love it!
More IT Word Family & Sight Word Activities
The following activities are extras that we did for lesson 11. All of them, except for the magnetic spelling, can be found in Unit 3 of Learn to Read.
One of the things I have yet to feature in a post about Learn to Read are the word family word banks that are in each pack. It’s a great way to review the words from that family. I even included words that start with blends and digraphs. You can post them on the wall for learners {I did this in the classroom}. If you don’t cut them out, you can laminate the page, hole punch a corner, and make a word family flip book. {Yes, she’s using a playdough knife.}
Sorting and reading IT words to IP words
A couple of years ago, we had the chance to review Learning Resources Magnetic Letter Construction kit. We still use them for spelling. This week, she wrote down her two new sight words and a couple of review ones.
I pulled out a magnetic cookie sheet and she spelled each word with the magnetic letter kit.
Roll and Race is absolutely NO PREP and is one of her favorites, as she rolls and races the two sight words against each other.
And Color It Crazy is requested every week. 🙂 She finds and writes the words,
then colors in the picture using her crazy color key.
