Sorting words is a hands-on way to get kids focusing in on spelling patterns, which helps them not only become a better speller, but a better reader, too! Want to learn more about word study? You can read my 10 day series called, Teaching Spelling Through Word Study.

The Two Sounds of Final Y Word Sort
Here’s a Valentine’s Day themed word sort for the two sounds of final y (long i and long e) and is perfect for a child at the end of Within Word Patterns Stage or beginning of Syllables and Affixes Stage. It’s called MY CANDY HEARTS and here’s how it works:
Students sort these candy hearts (2 pages of hearts)
under the head words “my” and “candy”, then talk about the pattern they notice within these words (y on the end of a one-syllable word generally says the long i sound and y on the end of a two-syllable word generally makes the long e sound).
