Valentine’s Day books for the Young Child:
- My Heart is Like a Zoo by Michael Hall may not be truly be a “Valentine Book”, but kids will enjoy counting the hearts on each page and learning about all the emotions we can experience. {I also love that it sneaks in some similes, too!}
- There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Rose by Lucille Colandro is another fun book in the series of Old Woman books. The rhyming song is fun to sing along. My kids always enjoy guessing what she will make at the end of the book based off all the things she eats.
- I Love you Through and Through by Bernadette R. Shustak is such a great book to help kids know that you will love them no matter what. I love how the little teddy interacts with each emotion.
- Bunny My Honey by Anita Jeram is a sweet love story about a baby bunny and his mommy. Your kids will love the refrain that’s repeated throughout and may even make up motions to it, like my kids did when they were young.
- You are My Sunshine by Jimmie Davis. Oh, if I could be given a quarter for every time I’ve read this book, I’d be rich. This has always been a favorite song of my kids when they were young. Even my current 2 year old loves to try to sing it, as you can see here. 🙂
- Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton – The rhythm and rhyme of this sweet long song will get stuck in your head. Promise. And kids will ask for it again and again.
- God Gave us Love by Lisa T. Bergren- although definitely a book for older kid as well, I love how Grandpa Bear explains how God’s love compels us to love others.
- Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney is definitely a classic. You simply can’t have a Valentine’s Day book list for young kids without it! My kids love not only reading it, but acting it out when we read together.
- The Day it Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond is a sweet book about a little girl who collects hearts and make special valentines for her friends. Younger children as well as older children will enjoy this read.
