The ability to count syllables is an important part of phonological awareness, which is a pre-reading skill. And these FREE Syllable Counting Cards {download at the END of this post} are a great way to make counting syllables visible to kids. These are different than our syllable clip cards, as they get kids using manipulatives to represent each syllable, making it very easy to see and physically count how many syllables are in each word, like we did with our LEGO bricks.
If you’re looking for syllable clip cards, you can find these in each lesson of Reading the Alphabet, in our Pre-K/K Packs, and at The Measured Mom.

Syllable Counting Cards
The great thing about our syllable clip cards is that you don’t need a ton of supplies to use them. Just print them off and cut them out. You can use any small manipulative around your house/classroom for the child to identify the picture {a picture key is included in the free download} and place on the cards.
We pulled out our cookie tray, lined up 8 syllable counting cards and used our Power Magnets to count the syllables.
But you can use ANY small manipulative you have lying around. Dried beans, pennies, transparent counters, small, foam blocks; we even have a stash of the screw-on lids from the on-the-go kind of applesauce that worked just fine!

Thank you so much for these. My son and I greatly appreciate these. God bless you!!!
You are VERY welcome!
I like these. I was mentoring a kindergarten teacher the other day. She had similar cards in a station for the kids. I learned by working with the kids, that they didn’t have a way to check their work to truly learn. Are these self correcting? It would be neat to be able to flip the card over and check your own answer. 🙂
They are not, but you could totally make them self-checking by doing just that. Once you print them off, just jot down the answer on the back. I know I’ve done this as a classroom teacher; and YES, it is a huge help for kids because they need that immediate feedback if you’re not there.
Hi are the cards in the photos for counting syllables or phonemes?
They are for syllables, but you could probably use it either way. I do have Phoneme Counting Cards here–> https://thisreadingmama.com/phoneme-counting-cards/
Hi,
Is there any way I can get the key for the syllable count and clip? I am using the reading the alphabet curriculum for the Letter L. I am not sure whether I am doing it right or not. Please let me know. Thanks!
Do you want the key for this printable or RTA letter L? If it’s this printable, the key is on the first page.
