As often as I can, I like to integrate literacy with other subjects. Not only does this help to cover all the learning objectives a little faster in the school year, but I think it also makes learning a little more interesting for kids.
So, I used Homeschool Creations’ Read! Build! and Write! idea as inspiration and added a math twist to create some Read, Build and Write Mats with pattern blocks. Fun!

Pattern Block Read, Build and Write Mats
NJoy, age 6, loves pattern blocks. Always has. Recently I quickly made up some read and build cards for him and posted the picture on Instagram. A couple of readers mentioned it would be nice to have the idea posted on my blog, so here we are! But I’ve freshened up the idea and created some read, build, and write mats.
Included in the pattern block pack are 12 different mats plus pattern block cards and blank mats for you to use your own creativity!
The idea is that kids read the directions for the shapes they need, then build a picture with those pattern blocks.
Once the picture has been built, the child can trace around it or remove it and draw it in the space provided.
After drawing, the child writes a sentence {or two} about his drawings.
I think it’s fun for students to share their drawings and writings, even of the same read, build, and write mats.
And sometimes kids just do it their own way and refuse to draw or trace the pattern blocks, but that’s okay, too. He was still reading, building and writing…so ha! 😉

Isn’t rombi supposed to be spelled with an “h”? Rhombus/rhombi? Maybe there is an alternate spelling that I don’t know about?
You are exactly right!! How did I miss that? I am out of town right now, but will fix it as soon as I return.
All fixed! Thanks for heads up! 🙂
Thanks for the sheets. They are so fun.
Awesome! I love the open-ended part of this. No wrong answers, just creativity!!! For my little guy that isn’t writing yet, I can transcribe what he tells me. Thanks for posting!!!
Totally LOVE this idea! Thanks for sharing! It allows the kiddo to be create! 🙂 Love it!
Yes! My son is such an out-of-the-box thinker and this gives him the freedom to do that. 🙂
