Before Using these Consonant Clusters Worksheets

Consonant clusters is a term people sometimes use for blends. But I think consonant clusters take blends to a whole new level. While blends have TWO consonants side-by-side that make two sounds, like bl or st, consonant clusters are a group of THREE consonants side-by-side. Blends {and digraphs} are the foundation for consonant clusters.

The most common beginning consonant clusters are: scr-, shr- spl-, spr-, squ-, str-, and thr-. And these can be very tricky for readers, especially struggling readers! My own second grader still struggles with them. So, I thought it might be helpful to make some color the clusters pages for her to practice.

And since they fit in nicely to our Color the Chunk series, I’m sharing them with you, too!

Before you ask learners to do these consonant clusters pages, make sure they can read simple short vowel words with blends and digraphs, long vowel team words, and words with diphthongs because those patterns are all incorporated into this pack.

If we want to narrow in on just the consonant clusters, it helps for learners to have already mastered the other patterns. Otherwise, you’re asking learners to focus on too many skills at one time. As you can see, we have Color the Chunk pages for all of these.

These work just like all our other Color the Chunk pages. Learners simply color in or highlight the featured consonant cluster in each word. {At the top, there’s a guide picture to remind learners of the cluster’s sound.}

They then use the highlighted cluster to help them read the entire word. Note: Each page has one or two challenge words at the bottom under the line. These are two-syllable words. Learners may need extra support to read these words.
