What is a Diphthong?

Diphthong is definitely a strange-sounding word, and it has an even stranger spelling! So, what exactly is a diphthong?

According to Moats in her book, Speech to Print, diphthongs are “vowels that glide in the middle.”

I think that’s a simple, yet accurate definition. With a diphthong, the mouth begins with one vowel sound and then “glides” into another vowel sound, like the oi in coin. If you say it out loud {and even watch yourself in a mirror}, you can feel {and see} how you glide from /o/ to /ee/.

With that understanding in the background, let’s move on to our color the chunk pages!

Diphthong Color the Chunk Pages

These pages work like most of our other color the chunk phonics pages. They’re a great way to help readers really SEE the chunk they can use to help them read words. I’ve been so encouraged to hear how many of you have used these with older, struggling readers successfully! Woohoo!

If you’re wondering what a diphthong is, be sure you read all the info in my diphthong worksheets post.

The diphthongs included in these pages are: ou, ow, oo (as in foot), oi, oy, aw, and au.

With these pages, learners use a marker or crayon to color in the pattern. Older learners may prefer to use a highlighter as it’s a little “cooler” than a crayon or marker. 🙂

After the patterns are colored in, learners read the words aloud.

Diphthong Color the Chunk Mixed Review - This Reading Mama

At the end of the download, I’ve included 4 mixed review pages for ow/ou, long oo (moon)/short oo (foot), oi/oy, and aw/au. Learners color code the different patterns at the top of the page (in the black area) and then use their color code to color in the chunks on the page. They they read the words aloud.

I will say that the long oo and short oo review page is different because both oo patterns are identical. Learners need to read the words FIRST to decide which kind of oo is in the word. Then, they color code them in. {The directions on that page remind you to do it a little differently than the rest of the pages.}
