FREE Diphthong Worksheets – Build & Write

What exactly is a diphthong? A diphthong is a vowel pattern than requires learners to glide two vowel sounds together. For example, oi makes a kind of long o sound (although not a true long o) and then a long e sound side by side. If it helps, you can think of them as vowel blends.

Now, technically some of the long vowel teams are diphthongs. Take for example ai. We really glide together the long a sound and then a quick long e sound after it.

But we’re not going to get into anything technical here. We’re going to keep it very simple with just these diphthong worksheet for ou, ow, oi, oy, au, and aw.

These simple build and write pages are NO PREP. Learners just need scissors, glue, and a pencil to complete them. Each page just focuses on one diphthong, which helps if you’re trying to zero in on one particular skill.

Learners simply cut out the word chunks at the bottom.

Then they glue the chunks to spell words. After the words are glued down, learners write each word.

These could make a great small group page to practice a particular diphthong. You could also give them as independent work in the classroom or at home.

A Quick Note: Some of these pictures may be bit ambiguous. I HIGHLY recommend going over each picture before learners start working on it so there’s no guessing. If you’re unsure what a picture is, there is a picture key on the first page of the download.

May i ask a question please? Just from a quick look at this page, it appears the worksheets use capital letters for the dipthong on the title. Is that correct? May I ask why? The second letter in the dipthong would not be capitalized in a word. Just wanted to ask before I print.

Sometimes I capitalize things in a title for emphasis, as is the case here.
