Color the Chunk for Long o Word Families
These pages include SEVEN different long o word families: -oke, -ole, -one, -ore (r-influenced), -oat, -old, and -ow.
Words that begin with a single letter, such as cone, are mixed in with words that begin with blends or digraphs, such as stone and phone on each page.
Several pages include two-syllable words at the very bottom, like you see on the page in the image above. Learners may need extra help dividing the word into two syllables, so be prepared to provide some extra support there.
Learners simply color in the long o vowel word family chunk in each word. They can use crayon, marker, or older readers may prefer a highlighter. {This makes the chunks “pop” out when they are colored in…such a great visual help for struggling and beginning readers!}
After coloring them all in, learners use the word family chunks to read the words.
To help learners remember to start reading on the left side of the word, you can write a little green dot at the beginning of the word.
Extend the activity, or challenge learners who are ready, by asking them to write sentences on the back of the page with some of the words.
