Color the Chunk – Long e Word Families

Our color the chunk pages have become a favorite with readers. Personally, I like that they

  • require no colored ink,
  • are NO PREP,
  • take very little time to use {leaving more time for real reading},
  • help readers SEE those sometimes tricky phonics patterns,
  • and work well for older readers who don’t always want to see pages splattered with clip art.

I love how one reader recently shared that she uses it as a warm-up before reading to get some focused practice on phonics skills. Brilliant!

The eight long e word families included in this pack are: -ee, -eed, -eep, -eak, -eal, -eam, -ear (an r-influenced long e sound), and -eat.

Learners simply color in the word family rime (or chunk) as they find it in each word. They use the chunk to read each word aloud. One picture and key word are included up at the top of the page to support the phonics skill.

draw a green dot to start reading at the beginning of the word

Remember to help learners start reading at the BEGINNING of the word. Putting a green dot under the first letter may help remind them to do this.
