Before we get too far, please note that these rhyming words are based on a neutral, American accent. If you speak English in another part of the world, it is possible that some of these will not rhyme or you’ll have more than one rhyme on a card. Feel free to leave out any cards that don’t work with your accent.

I have used these with my 1st grader to review the vowel sounds and patterns she’s worked on this year {with some sight words mixed in}. But you better believe I’ll be putting them in my toolbox for the beginning of 2nd grade, too!

To prep, I gather cardstock {copy paper is too flimsy for clip cards} and some clothespins. Print and cut out. If you want to provide the answer on the back to make them self-checking, just put a dot on the opposite side.

Instead of matching the vowel PATTERN, like so many of our other phonics clip cards, learners are matching the word that has the same SOUND. When learners use these, you’re saying, “Clip the word that has the same SOUND as the picture.”

As you can see in one of the examples above, snake would match wait because they both have the long a sound. Notice how I’ve included have on that same card. That’s because it’s a sight word that doesn’t follow the CVCe pattern. I did this to make these same vowel sound clip cards more of a challenge.

I’ve also mixed up several phonics skills in these, so learners are getting a good review in by clipping these. These cards are reviewing sight words, short vowels, long vowel (CVCe and vowel teams), bossy r vowels, and diphthongs!

And… you’ll find an answer key in the back of the download! Woohoo!

I’m not sure what’s going on because it works for me, so I can’t see the error. But I know lots of people are having problems. Working to resolve it.

    Can you help?
