Want a super fun way to play with eggs while working on sight words and spelling? Then, try this sight word egg hunt we called Scrambled Eggs!
{This post was originally published April 3, 2012.}
It probably goes without saying that phonics is important for young readers and spellers. But, like I mention in my Phonics or Sight Words article, the ability to quickly and accurately read and spell words that are frequently used in the English language is also important. These frequently used words are often called sight words. Want to know which sight words are important? You can even find printable sight word lists on my blog.

Scrambled Eggs: A Sight Word Egg Hunt
To prepare the sight word egg hunt,
1. use Sharpie and write numbers 1-12 on 12 different plastic eggs.
If you’re worried about messing up your eggs, just scribble over top of the Sharpie number with a dry erase marker and the number comes right off! So cool!
2. Prepare a list of spelling words for your child to choose from for the 12 sight words. I picked words from my son’s DIY word wall notebook and wrote them on the printable spelling word chart from my ebook, Printable Spelling Activities and Games.
3. Print off the spelling “tiles” {download has color and black/white option}. You could also use letter tiles, but I do like that the printable version has the n‘s, p‘s and other confusing letters underlined so that kids know which letter it is.
4. Cut out the letters that you need for each word and put them in each egg. Shake them up so the letters and good an scrambled.
5. Now, hide all the eggs! {Here comes the fun part.}
Print off the scrambled eggs page {color and black/white available for a girl or boy}. The child finds the eggs, unscrambles the words, and then writes them in the chart. Then, the child can write the words in ABC order, too!

I LOVE this idea! We always have the plastic eggs number match game around Easter (it survives for a time until the eggs get, literally, cracked), and this is a great way to expand for my son. We’ll be using much simpler words since he is four years old, but he will love that it is a puzzle. Very clever idea.
Thanks, Jaimi. I must have missed your post on the eggs number match game. I’d love to view it! Can you send a link??
Very clever and fun idea, yet it has academic rigor. Thank you so much for this idea! Carolyn
You’re welcome. 🙂
Love it!
I adapted this idea for my son struggling to make up sentences. Instead of letter tiles, I put in words. Then he had to arrange the words to make a reasonable sounding sentence.
