While phonics instruction is important, sight words are also a vital part of teaching kids to read {and spell}. These easy to make sight word puzzles are a fun way to work on those important sight words and they only take minutes to make! {Yay! for low prep!}

Easy to Make Sight Word Puzzles
I recently made these sight word puzzles for NJoy {almost 4 years old}, as he has worked through the first few weeks of Reading the Alphabet. Each week, he has learned a new sight word and was ready for a little review of them.
Materials
- craft sticks– While we used our colored craft sticks, you could use the wood colored ones and write each word in a different colored Sharpie. Different colored sticks or markers help to make this activity self-checking.
- permanent marker- I only used black, but you could use different colors for each word.
Easy Prep
Press the two craft sticks together side by side and write your word on them. If you’d like, you can tape the sticks together on the back before you write, to keep them from sliding around. And if you have older kids, they could make these for each other, which would be NO PREP for you!
Separate and mix up all your puzzle pieces. As the child works each puzzle, be sure to ask the child to read each word made.
Extension Ideas
- If you’d like to add a spelling or accountability piece, ask the child to write down the words he makes.
- Put the words in ABC order.
- Write a sentence using the word.
- Or adapt the puzzles into phonics puzzle pieces by simply writing phonics words on the sticks instead of sight words.
