S-Blends Phonemic Awareness Cards
One tip for readers who are struggling a little with phonics, like sounding out words, is to take a little step back from the printed letters/words {phonics} and just play with and listen for sounds in words. This builds the learner’s phonemic awareness, a skill much-needed for reading AND writing.
As my 1st grader has moved from the CVC words we did last year with Learn to Read into more short vowel words with blends, she was having a few meltdowns and frustrations. So, I decided to create some beginning blends sound cards to help her really listen for the blends in at the beginning of words.
And today, I’m sharing 8 free s-blends cards from my Beginning Sounds Pack!
Why S-Blends?
S-blends are a FANTASTIC blend to start with when you’re working with beginning or struggling readers! Why? The sound /s/ can be vocalized (or stretched out for a long time). The term we use for this kind of sound is continuant sound or continuous sound.
This allows learners to really feel the sounds in their mouth as they say them. F-blends (fr and fl) also work well for using the continuous sound in a blend.
For each card, just read the prompt at the top, name each picture, then ask the learner for the beginning sound(s).
One of the awesome parts about these cards is that the answers can be printed on the back!
To do this, be sure to open the file with the free, updated Adobe Reader. Once open, click “print on both sides of paper”, making sure you click “flip on the long edge.” If you miss this step, the answers will be upside down.
I’ve honestly been amazed at how these phonemic awareness cards have built my daughter’s confidence in understanding and listening for blends in words. In turn, this has helped her attack those words in her reading even better! Woohoo!

Hi,
I have your number puzzle with the large number with cut outs. It has a second large numberange with smalleregard numbers on the back. How do I reverse the image so that when I cut out the pieces the number side is a reflection of the front pictures
I have not ever tried to do that. Once opened in Adobe Reader, look at the options you have to print and see if it might be there.
Becky, are you familiar with the SIPPS program?
I’m not, but just looked at their site. It looks amazing.
