Parts of Speech Word Sorts
In order to work in some hands-on learning, I created some parts of speech word sorts. The best part about this hands-on activity is that they are NO PREP. Yep. Learners can cut the sort out themselves!
Six different sorts included in the free pack are:
- Nouns: Person, Place, and Thing Sort
- Noun, Verb, or Both Sort {words like play can be a noun and a verb}
- Noun, Verb, or Adjective Sort
- Noun, Verb, Adjective, or Pronoun Sort
- Adverbs: How?, When?, Where? or How often? Sort
- Adjective or Adverb Sort
To use the sorts, learners put the head grammar words up at the top of their work space. A table top or floor works!
Then learners sort the words by their parts of speech. The words I included match those of about a 1st to 2nd grade level. If you’re doing these sorts with struggling learners or younger learners, be sure they know what each word says.
This is an example of a finished sort. Learners can copy their sort or use some of the words in sentences.
If you’re unsure of where any of the words go within the sorts, there are color-coded answer keys that can help on the download.
