These orthographic mapping sight word cards are a great way to work on mapping those sometimes tricky high frequency words!
Please note: These are blank cards except for the word. Answers are not provided for each card. For a “how to” guide, be sure to check out my post, Orthographic Mapping with Sight Words.

Orthographic Mapping Sight Word Cards
Orthographic mapping is a technique used that shows kids how to use the phonics skills they know to map or chart out a word. Instead of ignoring the fact that our language is a phonetic language and just memorizing words, we point out how they can use the phonics they know to read or decode the entire word or parts of a word.
Many sight words, are 100% decodable {or can be sounded out.} Take for example in, it, if, or that. All of these words have letters or combinations of letters that follow the phonics rules.
Other sight words can be partially sounded out. This includes words like said, was, or they. When this is the case, we can draw attention to the easy and harder parts of the word.
I like to have learners code and/or code the word to help them better remember the easy and hard parts of sight words.
The example cards you see above show the easy parts of the word colored green, the tricky parts in orange, and the silent letter left blank {at the end of like.}
I’ve also added some written coding to the words such as the crossed out silent e or the long a symbol above the ey in they.
What Sight Words are Included?
This free pack includes 150 words from Sally Shaywitz’s Overcoming Dyslexia, 2nd ed. You’ll find them on page 245 of her book.

This was extremely helpful. Thank you!
I love these and all your orthographic mapping resources. They are helping my students who never had phonics jump ahead in reading!
Didn’t you have a set that was colored in green, red, and yellow?
I did, but I had to change them because of a copyright issue. 🙁
