Hard and Soft C and G Letter Sounds
Some letter sounds are trickier than others. C and G are two of them because they more than one sound. The two typical sounds of C and G are their hard and soft sounds: Cc- /k/ and /s/ and Gg- /g/ and /j/. But, how are readers and spellers supposed to know when to use which sound?
While I’m not a big fan of learning rule after rule for phonics {because most rules are broken}, there is a pattern that governs that seems to govern which sound the C and G makes. I created a little chant for it, which is included in my C & G pack:
Basically, when e, i, or y follows a c or g, they make their soft sounds. While there are some exceptions like girl, get, & cello, this “rule” is mostly followed in the English language.

Included in the freebies are two picture sorting pages for hard and soft c and g. Learners simply cut the pictures out {which have the words for added support}, sort them, and glue them down. Then, learners are asked to tell what they notice about words that have a hard c or soft c, an important step you don’t want to skip!
I’m sharing one of my six word sorts from the pack. My favorite thing about the word sorts are the “oddball” words mixed into the word bank. This requires learners to do a little more thinking about word patterns instead of just copying words in columns.
A Row of 4 is a simple game to reinforce reading those hard and soft c/g words. It’s played with a partner, which each partner using a different color counter or dot paint marker.
It’s played in a similar fashion as Connect 4, with the winner getting four in a row. The Measured Mom has several of these games for different phonics skills.
Enjoy teaching!
