ALuv (in 1st grade) is working through the Words Their Way short a/a_e sort this week and I’ve created a few extra Long a (a_e) activities to accompany the sort. {download link found at the end of this post}
The focus of these printables are to bring the child’s attention to the rime patterns within words. This helps young readers see that some words share a common pattern, such as ake, and that pattern (or rime) can help them read an unknown word, such as drake. This is an important step in learning to read by analogy, something proficient readers do without much thought. You will also find short a words included as a review and to help kids see the comparison between the patterns.
