Learn to Read: Short u Word Families Reader & Activities
Each week, I have shared the color reader. Click to find all free word family books. To make it into a book, be sure you open in the newest version of Adobe Reader and print short ways front/back. I like to use cardstock because it’s durable and the ink doesn’t bleed through. {If you’re planning on using these with multiple children, it might be good to laminate it, too.} Then, staple together with a long-armed stapler.
To review the three short u word families from Unit 4, there’s a spelling game included called, “Just Swap 1”. This game builds phonemic awareness, as learners name each picture on the game board, then build the word with letter tiles. Each time they move 1 space on the board, they have to figure out which letter needs to be swapped out.
Rainbow Roll & Write gets learners writing the two new sight words multiple times. I also like to ask my daughter to spell the words as she writes them. {You can find even more word pages here.}
Also included {but not pictured} is the Roll, Read, & Find short u word families dice game. Learners roll, read the sentence, then trace the short u words.
More Short u Word Families & Sight Word Activities
The following activities come from the bundle pack of Learn to Read, Unit 4.
Of course, Color it Crazy was included since my Kindergartner loves to color!
A short vowel and sight word review section are also included in the fourth lesson of each unit.
The Mix & Fix spelling game reviews lots of CVC short u words, not just those from lessons 13-15. Roll the die, move your marker, unscramble the word on the board, and write the word correctly on the recording sheet. {This game is a lot like the Sneaky Snakes pages from my Blending Sounds CVC Pack.}
Of course, she enjoyed beating me!
The dab it page gets her sounding through short u words and then spelling/writing the words.
We also played a few rounds of W-O-R-D-O, which is a short u review game that’s played just like BINGO. 6 ready-to-play boards are included in the pack as well as editable boards if you’d like to create a class set.
We did a few activities to review all eight sight words from Unit 4, like
sight word shapes
and the sight word maze {get through the maze by finding only words that are spelled correctly from the word bank}. Instead of using our dot paint, we used our transparent counters. I found it best to use our Power Magnets to anchor her page first.
