A Fun Way to Write Spelling Words this Summer {Word Bump!}

FREE Summer Word Bump ~ This Reading Mama

Today, I’m sharing the FREE summer edition for Word Bump! {download link at the end}, a GREAT way to write spelling words this summer and keep them fresh. I’ve shared before that while summer can be a nice break from schoolwork, it still needs to be sprinkled with learning activities to keep minds sharp. That will look different for each family, but if you can find a fun groove this summer, go for it!

Write Spelling Words this Summer {with FUN}

One of the ways you can review the sight words your child has learned is make a list. If your child attends school, request to get a list of spelling words she has worked on all school year and use that to review words. To prepare our activity, I let ALuv, who is at the end of 2nd grade, do a simple penny toss on his sight word folder {you can see more about his folder in this post} and whichever 12 words the penny landed on, he used for his list. Just one way to cut down on prep work for me. 😉

This time he played with his 5 year old brother, who also had his own list of spelling words. That’s one of the beauties of this game…each child can have their own list of words on their own level. The game is also flexible in that you do not have to use sight words each time. We’ve used 12 words that share a phonics pattern before, too.

First, I slip the page into a plastic sleeve protector. {Although we have a laminator, we use the sleeve protectors more often because it’s the cheap way of laminating.} Both boys took turns rolling the two dice {there are game boards for 1 die or 2 and 3 dice}. Each picked a word from their list to write. If the other one rolled the same number as his “opponent”, he could erase that word and write a word from his own list in his color dry erase marker. {Full details on how to play are on the first page of the free download at the end of this post.} Whoever had the most of their own colored words on the board was the winner!
