Digraph Memory Match Games
The idea with these cards is to have learners listen for beginning, ending, and middle sounds in words by playing memory matching games.
Developmentally speaking, the digraph memory match games should be played in this order:
- beginning digraph sounds
- ending digraph sounds
- middle digraph sounds
You can read more about this order in my post, Playing with Phonemes – Part 1.
I highly recommend reading the “Quick Notes” on page 2 of the download to give you tips for how to use the cards as well as some ways to adapt using the cards. Some learners will need an extra challenge, while others may not be able to handle the game. There are tips for both kinds of learners on page 2 of the file.
To play the game, just follow the rules of the classic game or memory match. Each matching pair, however, has 1- a card with the digraph shown in the first, middle, or ending position and 2- a picture card with the missing digraph in the beginning, middle, or ending position as seen above. {There are three matching pairs in the image above.}
Not sure what a picture represents? No worries! I’ve included a picture key for all the pictures!
There are digraph cards for beginning phoneme matches such as sh and sheep. The beginning digraphs that are included are: sh, th, ch, wh, ph, wr, kn, and gn.
There are digraph matching cards for ending phonemes such as ck and clock. The ending digraphs included are: sh, th, ch, ck, ph, and ng.
There are also digraph matching cards for middle phonemes such as ph and gopher. The middle digraphs included are: sh, th, ch, ck, ph, and ng.
Each digraph card has three matching image cards. This is to allow you to change up the game so learners aren’t just memorizing which image goes with each letter. Each digraph card and picture card comes in color {as seen in this post} or in blackline to save ink.
