I highly recommend reading the “Quick Notes” on page 2 of the download to give you tips for how to use the cards as well as some explanations about the cards.
Phoneme Memory Match Games
The idea with these cards is to have learners listen for beginning, ending, and middle sounds in words by playing memory match games.
Developmentally speaking, the phoneme memory match games should be played in this order:
- beginning sound games
- ending sound games
- middle sound games
You can read more about this order in my post, Playing with Phonemes – Part 1.
I will say that these phoneme memory match cards do require prep work as you cut out the cards; but if you’re the master of a paper cutter, you’ll find that it’s a BREEZE to cut them out with one. Even if you have to cut them out by hand, I think you’ll find that the games ARE TOTALLY WORTH the prep work because games are fun and can motivate learners…even our reluctant learners!
To play, just follow the rules of the classic game or memory match. Each matching pair, however, has 1- a card with the letter shown in the first, middle, or ending position and 2- a picture card with the missing letter in the beginning, middle, or ending position as seen above. {There are three matching pairs in the image above.}
There are consonant cards for beginning phoneme matches such as p and pencil
consonant cards for ending sound memory match games such as final m and gum,
and consonant and vowel cards for the middle sound in words like d in spider or i in fish.
*Note: Each letter card has two matching image cards. This is to allow you to change up the game so learners aren’t just memorizing which image goes with each letter. Each letter card and picture card comes in color {as seen in this post} or in blackline to save ink.
