I’ve been using many of our Color the Chunk Phonics Pages with my own 2nd grader. Applying phonics skills to reading does not come easily for her. But these focus phonics pages are helping her to feel successful.

Color the Chunk – Short o Word Families
When learners highlight or color in the phonics pattern, it kind of “jumps” right off the page and takes away a lot of the guessing for them.
I will quickly say that we want learners to start at the BEGINNING of the word when they read these words. The colored part does jump out, but we want to make sure readers start reading the words from left to right. Drawing a green dot under the first letter of each word may be a helpful reminder.
This is our fourth word family set. Today, it’s short o! The short o word family chunks included in this freebie are: -ot, -og, -op, -ob, and -ock.
Just like our other color the chunk word family pages, there are two levels included.
Level 1: Color the word family chunks, then use the chunk to help you read each word. (Words below the line contain blends and digraphs.)
Level 2: This level takes it a step further. Nonsense words are included. After coloring and reading the words, learners circle only the real words. This gives your readers the extra challenge to think about word meanings.
