Chunk Reading
Teaching readers to look for word chunks is one of the most powerful word attack strategies. Instead of reading each individual sound in a word, they can be taught to look for chunks, like ar, er, ir, or, and ur.
This strategy of reading by chunks is something that doesn’t always come naturally to beginning readers. Struggling readers, even those in upper elementary school, often miss this skill completely. It needs to be explicitly taught.
Chunk reading is a life-long reading skill. Even those of us who are proficient readers read and spell MANY words using word chunks. Teaching learners how to do this is SO, SO powerful!
Bossy R Phonics Pages – Color the Chunk
My 2nd grade daughter struggles a bit with phonics and reading. So, I developed these Color the Chunk bossy r pages. The point is to help her SEE the bossy r chunks in each word, color them in, and then read each word using the word chunk.
In this free pack, you’ll find a page for each bossy r pattern: ar, er, ir, or, and ur.
I’ve also included one “review” page that works a little differently. Learners color code the chunks, find and color them in the words, then read each word.

I’m so glad you like it for your learners! I will continue to send more out like this. 🙂
Colouring the “chunk” is such a wonderful idea! Thank you so much. I appreciate the guide words in the top corner too. I think these are the best! Keep the creative ideas coming!!! Actually – a whole series, for l blends, s blends, digraphs etc would be so helpful!!
Awesome! Thanks for the ideas.
I am an intervention teacher and this has been an AWESOME activity to help them in sounding out words.
Yay! I’m glad it’s worked for you!!
