18 Bonus Phonics Cards

By thisreadingmama 4 Comments

Years ago, I created two sets of Phonics Cards. The first set has the alphabet and beginning blends & digraphs while the second set covers ending blends & digraphs, long vowels, and diphthongs.

Today, I’m finishing them off with a third set – a BONUS Phonics Cards Set, which contains short vowels, less common long vowels, and w+a / squ+a.

18 Bonus Phonics Cards

What’s included in this bonus set?

  • Short Vowel Cards- with just lowercase a, e, i, o, and u listed at the top {Our first phonics set has these cards, but with both uppercase and lowercase letters listed at the tops of the cards.}
  • Short e – EA as in bread, sweat, and head
  • Long a – EA as in great, EI as in eight, & EY as in prey
  • Long e – E_E as in eve, IE as in shield, & EY as in key
  • Long i – _Y as in cry and I as in child or sign
  • Long o– O as in old or troll
  • Long u – OU as in soup
  • W+A as in water or wash
  • SQU+A as in squash or squat

hole punch the corners of bonus phonics cards to make a phonics flip book

I recommend hole punching a hole in the top left corner of each card and adding it to your other phonics cards to create a flip book. This way, you can include all of them together or just the phonics skills your learners need to work on.

put bonus phonics cards on a ring clip

This also makes your phonics cards portable. The ring can also be hung on a hook right on a bulletin board, at a center, in your kitchen, or at the learner’s work area.
