Addition and Subtraction Games

These addition and subtraction games were designed with 1st graders in mind, but older or younger children may enjoy them as well! The 6 games included work just like our Roll & Race Number Sense games.

using teddy bear counters to solve addition and subtraction problems

To play, learners roll a single die. They find the first problem on the row that matches their die (since he rolled a three, he is working the problem on row three). Some learners may need small manipulatives, like counting bears, to help them visualize the problem.

recording answers to problems on recording sheet

Optional: Once the problem is solved, learners can write the answer on a recording sheet, which serves as a great accountability piece if you can’t do this activity with them.

covering addition and subtraction game board with counter

Once the problem has been solved, learners cover up the spot on their board and then roll again. We used our transparent counters, but you can use any small manipulative you have on-hand.

roll and race 1st place winner for addition and subtraction games

The idea is to have a row that “wins” first place, second place, AND third place, which means they work roughly 20 problems, give or take a few.

The addition and subtraction game my son did was the 6th one in the pack. Here’s a peek at the other ones included:

writing number sentences with three number games

Writing Number Sentences Game – use the three numbers to write a number sentence (to 20).

basic addition and subtraction games to 20 - free

Addition and Subtraction Games – solve the problems (one page for addition and one page for subtraction)

are they equal - addition and subtraction games

Are They Equal? – one game for only addition and one game for addition/subtraction)

roll and race are they equal - use crayon to circle equal or not equal

Another quick thought is instead of using counters to cover the board for the Are They Equal? games, learners can use two different colored crayons. If they are equal, learners circle the square in one color crayon. If they aren’t equal, they circle them in the other color.
