A couple of summers ago, I posted a reading log that my younger kids could color in as they read. As my kids age, they still like to color. So this summer, I have a printable reading log that zones in on minutes spent reading.

Time to Read: Printable Reading Log
My goal this summer is to have my kiddos read for 20-30 minutes each morning as a part of our weekday summer schedule. The goal is to get to 1,000 minutes by the end of the summer {maybe even more…hehe}.
When I told my 8 and 11 year old about this, they immediately got excited and started reading! I knew that I needed a practical way for them to keep track of their minutes.
So, this free printable reading log was born. Instead of tracking books, it tracks the time that my kids have read. I do have books lined up that fit my kids’ reading and interest levels. But because my kids all love reading in their beds at night, I’m also “allowing” other books to be read.
As they read, they color in one box per minute. I love that this also integrates a little math with the multiple hundreds boards! {Be sure to print front and back to get to the 1,000 minutes.}
After creating this book log, I felt that it might have too much going on for some kids {although both my boys prefer it}.
So I created a simpler one in which kids can count by 10’s to get to 1,000 minutes. This is also a great way to integrate some math skills!
Does 1,000 minutes of reading have to be your goal? No way! You can go lower or even higher. Do they have to do all the reading? No way! You can count the minutes you read aloud or read together, too. {Don’t tell my boys that!}
Having a visual way to keep track of the minutes they read can be very rewarding for some kids to see. I’m excited to see how many minutes my boys will get to this summer!

Thank you, I look forward to seeing all the wonderful things you create. I have three boys and I am always looking for ways to motivate them to read.
