Sidewalk Chalk Sight Words Game
This sidewalk chalk sight word game is super easy to play and is HIGHLY adaptable. You can spell phonics words, sight words, or work with numbers. We chose to use it for practicing sight words and had so much fun!
Materials
- dry erase board/marker {optional}
- sidewalk chalk
- roadway/sidewalk
- a list of sight words (we tend to stick with Fry’s high frequency word lists)
- bike, tricycle, scooter, or legs…anything to get kids moving!
Objectives
- to spell words by riding or running over letters in the correct order
- to burn some energy (and sneak in some learning in the process)
Getting Ready for Sidewalk Chalk Sight Words Game
I wrote letters all over our cul-de-sac with sidewalk chalk. If your neighborhood roadway has too much traffic for this game, try out a park nearby or your school/church parking lot. I didn’t write all 26, but stuck with the most common ones. If your child is old enough or would like to help, have him write some of the letters, too.
Playing the Sidewalk Chalk Sight Words Game
{These are updated pictures, as we have played this game SO MANY TIMES.} My kids are now 9 years old, 6 years old, nearly 5 years old, and 3 years old and they ALL love to play this game, adapted for their development.
My 9 year old and 6 year old both spell words sight words {or sometimes phonics words} that I call out to them. I give each one a different word that’s developmentally appropriate for them and so they don’t run over each other. Occasionally, I’ll bring out the dry erase marker and board and spell the words first, but I don’t always do this.
Their job is to spell the sight word by riding over the letters in order of the word either by scooter
or by bike.
Of course, the younger two want to play along! MBug {nearly 5 years old} likes to spell her sight words from Reading the Alphabet and sometimes simple CVC words
while NSis {3 years old} likes for me to call a letter from Learning the Alphabet for her to jump on. FUN!
