Shadows of our Savior in the Old Testament
The New Testament tells us that there are “shadows” of Jesus in the Old Testament. In other words, God intentionally dropped “hints” in the Old Testament so we’d know who the real Messiah was when He appeared.
For example, Moses lifted a bronze serpent on a pole in the wilderness in Numbers 21. While this account may seem strange standing on its own, Jesus tells Nicodemus that this Old Testament account was a picture or shadow of Him in John 3.
Both Colossians 2 and Hebrews 8 specifically use the word shadows. Another word for shadows is types, with the study of types of Jesus in the Old Testament called typology.
