What exactly are blends? Sometimes called consonant clusters, blends are two side-by-side consonants in which both letter retain their sound.
For example, the fr in frog is a beginning consonant blend. Both the /f/ and /r/ can be heard. The nd at the end of land is a final consonant blend as both the /n/ and /d/ can be heard.
If you’re wondering what the difference between consonant blends and consonant digraphs is, I’d encourage you to watch my video or download this free poster.

In this free pack, you’ll find six color l-blend puzzles for bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl. Each puzzle comes with 12-15 phonics pictures to reinforce the beginning l-blend sounds. Just cut out the puzzle pieces and use the puzzle mats to have your learner work them.
A picture key is included on all the pages, so you know what each picture represents. If you’d like, you can write the words on the back of each piece of the puzzle.

To make it a little more challenging, mix and match between my printable alphabet puzzles, printable digraph puzzles, and the l-blend puzzles. For example, use the s puzzle pieces and the sl puzzle pieces to have learners listen for /s/ vs. /s-l/. This is more challenging than you might think!
Enjoy teaching!
