Reading the Alphabet IG Word Family
Lesson 14 features work on the -IG word family and a review of the letters and sight words covered in lessons 8-13. To see how we incorporated all of the activities for the week, I’ve included a 5-day lesson outline. Feel free to use it or do it your own way. 🙂
Here are some shots of my preschooler (age 4) in action:
Spelling his sight words (he stuck with this MUCH longer than expected and actually spelled all of the sight words on his Word Wall!)
Spelling IG words with bottle caps-I printed off Version 2 (no onset) and he had to come up with the beginning sounds on his own as he spelled.
We read our emergent reader (A Big Rig) with a magnifying glass all week because of the magnifying glass in the book. 🙂 He REALLY liked this!
We reviewed the AT Word Family by sorting AT or IG in our pocket chart. It sounded like this /p/ – /ig/ or /k/ – /at/ for each picture, as I separated and emphasized the rime (at or ig) with each word. We actually did this activity twice back to back. The second time, I hung back a bit more and only offered support when he needed it.
Two of his favorite activities are the Roll and Stamp a Letter &
Roll a Rhyme because he gets to throw his education cubes around. I love his look of concentration. {The boy LOVES his Angry Bird PJ’s! Can you tell?? I have to bribe him to get dressed these days.}

We have been following your Reading the Alphabet program from the first week. My son already knew all the letters and most of the sounds so we only do the printable books, some magnetic letter play, and then random sight word games for review. I am so blown away with his progress. He just turned four and he is not only knows almost 20 sight words and 2 words families but he is actually excited about reading. Seeing how proud he is makes me so so so happy. When he showed an interest in learning to read I had no clue where to begin. I came across Reading the Alphabet in a pinterest board I had previously made. I am so glad we started it. This has been so helpful and we love the slow steady progression and the review days and bits of phonics. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
That is so encouraging to hear!! You are very welcome. I’m so thankful that God can use it to bless so many! 🙂
