    I did not learn phonics as a child…and it greatly limited my ability to decode new words as I read. I also had a hard time learning to spell words. (I was in 1st and 2nd grade at the height of the “whole language” movement.) I definitely want to teach my two children phonics!

    No, I did not. We leant by whole word recognition in those days. But phonics plays such a big part in decoding words now….

    I did not as we have a different alphabetical system where I came from and our vowels were all single sound.
