What is One-to-One Correspondence?
Along with rote counting {“1-2-3-4-5,” etc.}, one-to-one correspondence is an important foundational math skill. Without it, learners will struggle with pretty much all other number skills like counting on, adding, subtracting, and more/less concepts.
One-to-one correspondence is the ability look at objects and count them. As learners touch or point to the first object, they say “one.” As they come to the second object, they say, “two.” As they come to the third object, they say, “three.” You get the point.
Another term used that pretty much means the same thing as one-to-one correspondence is counting.
When my kids were younger, we counted all the time. We counted the stairs as we climbed them for naptime. We counted the forks as we set the table. We counted the blocks as we stacked our towers. {Part of me misses those simple days – sniff, sniff.}

One-to-One Correspondence Activity
This one-to-one correspondence activity is multisensory and a good way to burn energy, especially on the days when it’s difficult to get outside to play!
Prep It: For use with photo stacking blocks. You can buy the Photo Stacking Blocks or the Carson Dellosa’s Differentiated Learning Cubes from Amazon. I have them both, and they’ve both held up well.
- In one pocket cube, insert six number cards OR six dot pattern cards.
- In another pocket cube, insert six movement cards. You can choose from “Get up out of your seat” action cards, “In your seat” action cards, or mix and match the action cards.
Play It:
Using Dot Pattern Inserts:
- Learners roll one dot pattern die and one action die.*
- Learners count the dots on the block, then do the action that many times. For example, if a learner rolls a two and “jumping jacks,” he/she will do two jumping jacks.
- If you have more than one learner, the one that rolls the blocks can count the dots. To keep everyone moving, all learners can do the action while the learner who rolled counts aloud how many are done.
Using Number Inserts:
- Learners roll one number die and one action die.*
- Learners identify the number and do the action that many times. For example, if a learner rolls a six and “clap,” he/she will clap his/her hands six times.
- If you have more than one learner, the one that rolls the blocks can identify the number. To keep everyone moving, all learners can do the action while the learner who rolled counts aloud how many are done.
*Note: There are TWO options for action cards.
- The first set of action cards are designed to get kids UP and moving! Use with the number or dot pattern inserts.
- The second set of action cards can be done in a seated position. This version can be used if you’re short on time and/or is a good option for children with limited mobility. Use with the number or dot pattern inserts.
