Before diving into a plants unit or animals unit, I think it’s good to spend a little time exploring living vs. non-living. This helps learners have a clear understanding of how living things work. And that’s exactly what this free living vs non-living learning pack can help you do.

Living vs Non-Living Learning Pack
Included in this free pack are picture sorting cards, living vs. non-living characteristic question cards, student sorting pages, and 4 writing pages. {All color activities also come in blackline to save on ink!}
Learners can sort the cards on a table top or a pocket chart. We use our Standard Pocket Chart, which I also used a lot as a classroom teacher.
To help guide the sorting, I’ve included some simple question cards:
-Can it move on its own?
-Does it grow and change?
-Does it reproduce? {You could also ask: Can it make more of itself?}
-Does it need food and water?
-Does it need air?
-Is it made of cells? {not pictured}
While there are two more writing pages, my favorite one is where learners have to explain how apples can be living {on the tree} and non-living {picked and ready to eat}. There’s also a blank page where learners think of their own object that can be living and non-living.
I’d love for you to check out our unit studies on living things!
