FREE Lesson Plans and Outlines for Set 1 BOB Books - This Reading Mama

Welcome to Lesson Plans & Activities for the BOB Books {Sets 1-5}. Over the next couple of weeks, I will be sharing lesson outlines to go with the FREE BOB Book printables others and I have made over the last two years. The activities are meant to go in the order in which I’ve listed them, as they progress in their difficulty over the three days. You are completely free to change them/switch them out as you see fit for your reader(s).

Please note that these are only lesson outlines. If you desire more detailed lesson plans, be sure to click on the links provided to the free printables. Most of the free printables have more step-by-step guides on how to use the activities.

When Teaching Your Child to Read…

  •  Follow the lead of your child. If she shows signs of disinterest or frustration, STOP! Take a break. You may also need to re-evaluate if your child is ready for these books and activities. I cannot emphasize enough the need to be a student of your student. These activities are meant to be engaging, hands-on and fun. If it stops being that for either one of you, it’s time to pull back a little (or a lot).
  • While these decodable readers are helpful for beginning readers in terms of phonics and sight words, they provide little opportunity to work on comprehension (that’s just the nature of beginning decodable readers). Modeling comprehension strategies while reading quality literature out loud and with your child is also a vital component of teaching reading. You can find teacher/mom-tested book lists and read aloud tips on my Read Aloud Resources Pinterest Board.
