How to Teach Closed Syllables
Closed syllables {or VC/CV syllables} are the first kind of syllable we should teach our learners. That’s because closed syllables are more reliable and familiar to our learners. If your learners can read words like kit or ten, they are ready to learn how to apply that knowledge to read the longer word, kitten.
It’s not that simple for our struggling learners, though. It’s important that we teach reading closed syllable words in an explicit way, breaking down the process of decoding so all our readers can be successful. That’s what you’ll find in this video, How to Teach Closed Syllables. I encourage you to…
1. Watch the Video to Learn:
- A suggested order for teaching closed syllable words.
- A step-by-step process* learners can use to help them break apart and successfully read closed syllable words.
*The steps share in this video come from the things I learned while getting my grad certificate in Dyslexia and LBLD and two curricula based on Orton-Gillingham- Wilson Reading and All About Reading.
2. Snag the Freebies:
Snag the FREE Closed Syllable Read & Divide printables at the very end of this post. They’ll give your learners a NO PREP way to practice reading real and nonsense closed syllables.

I’m glad you like it! Thanks for your input. 🙂
Need to correct your {VC/CV} as the closed syllable format. Closed syllables end with a consonant. Did you mean (C)VC/(C)VC?
I guess I should have said words that START with a closed syllable have the VCCV pattern in them. I think it helps to teach kids to look for this pattern first so they can split the word into syllables. Then, they can examine each syllable.
Can we share the videos with parents?
You sure can! 🙂
I’m so grateful for this lesson on how to teach closed syllable words! You are a wonderful teacher!
Thank you!
Thank you for this content. The video is so helpful. My kiddo likely has dyslexia and his reading has taken off since we started using an OG curriculum. But he’s struggling a bit with syllable types and this is something new to me as a homeschooling parent.
