Tips for Teaching Syllable Types
As our readers move from reading mostly single syllable words to longer words, they need to be armed with strategies to help them break apart these longer words into smaller chunks. Otherwise, they may just guess at or even skip over longer words while reading.
Learning the six syllable types can help our readers find common patterns they know in longer words.
The tips and tricks you’ll read about or watch on the videos are explicit, hands-on, and systematic specifically with struggling readers in mind. BUT… {there’s always a big but, right?!?} you’ll find that these steps are good to teach to ALL your readers! It will empower them to read longer words.
Each video in the series will walk you through several example words for each syllable type so you’ll know how to do it. Also included in each post are free, NO PREP Read & Divide pages you can use with your learners to practice the skill out of context.
*The steps shared in these videos comes from the information I learned while getting my graduate certificate in Dyslexia and LBLD plus two curricula based on Orton-Gillingham- Wilson Reading and All About Reading.
