I only have a moment to post today, but I wanted to share a very simple, yet very effective way to help your young reader understand where to start and stop reading (print awareness). I call it the “green light, red light” method.
Just add a green dot under the first word of the page (green means go) and a red dot under the last word (red means stop), like I did with this insect-themed emergent reader. This works best on emergent readers, with only one sentence on each page. You can view and download (for free) some of my other emergent readers here.

What a great idea! My oldest is just beginning to string together sentences. This would be a great tool. Stopping by from Show and Share Saturday. 🙂
What a good way to teach where to start and stop. Young kids love the physical game of red light green light. If you add a real game of green light red light, you’d have most kids never forgetting this lesson!
Hadn’t thought of that…I like!
This is a fabulous idea. The best ideas are just so simple and make people wonder why they didn’t think of it, like this idea! Thank you so much for sharing so other people can use your materials. Carolyn
Oh what a fabulous idea! My son is starting to read on his own and loves “red light, green light.” I’m sure this will be incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for sharing it with me.
Oh, I’m so glad you think he’ll like it. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.
