Learning about greater than, less than, and equal numbers can be a hard concept for many kids. Here’s a fun and hands-on math activity my Kindergartner recently did called Grab a Handful! that we used to work on these number concepts {find the FREE printable page at the end of this post.}

Learning About Greater Than, Less Than and Equal Numbers
I believe with all my heart that one of the best way for kids to learn concepts is through hands-on manipulation of the material, especially when kids are being introduced to the concept. Plus hands-on activities make learning a little more fun, especially for the reluctant learner.
My Kindergartner has a solid foundation of numbers 1-200 {self-taught, really.} I wanted to find a way to extend his understanding of numbers, especially when it came to comparing numbers. So, I created Grab a Handful! for him. I pulled out our bag of pony beads {because they are small I knew that he was ready for larger numbers.} If your child/student needs to use smaller numbers, consider using larger manipulatives.
He reached into the bag, grabbed a handful, dumped them into an empty container, and counted all the beads.
He then wrote down the number he had counted on his recording sheet. This was repeated 8 times, for a total of 8 different numbers on his recording sheet.
Once all 8 numbers were written down on the sheet, he cut them apart, as well as the greater than, less than and equal symbols on the bottom of the sheet. We used the numbers and symbols to create true statements about his numbers.

Thank you for all that you share with your resources! I just used your rhyming clips as an “take-home” support for one of my students and I am excited to use your “missing addends” mat with my kiddos (tricky concept for 5-6 year olds). I just wanted to share my parody I created for the concept of Greater Than, Less Than since this post is about that concept. Hope it can help future kiddos with the concept in a fun way!
