There are certain words in the English language that are used more than others in our reading and in our spellings. These are often called high frequency words, or sight words. While we want kids to know phonics, sight words are equally important for kids to know automatically to make spelling and reading less laborious for them.
Question words are a kind of sight word and are found on some of the sight word lists for young readers and spellers. Today, I’m sharing a VERY simple question words chart to help kids remember how to read and spell them.
This free printable can be found at the END of the post. Just click on the teal, oval button.
Question Words Chart
This chart is so simple. It’s probably self-explanatory. It can be posted in a child’s folder, near their desk, or on a wall in schoolroom or classroom {such as near a writing or spelling center area}.
I like to use songs or chants to help kids remember the question words. Like our short vowel songs, all I do is sing the question words to a familiar tune, such as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. To chant, I just clap my hands and stomp my feet to a beat and then chant the question words aloud. This makes learning question words multi-sensory!
