This past week, my daughter asked me, “How do you spell ly on the end of the word?” An idea popped into my head. I thought for SURE I already had something on my blog that would do the trick, but I didn’t!
I created this affixes chart for her and today, I’m sharing it with you, too!

Common Affixes Chart
Understanding how to recognize prefixes and suffixes in reading longer words is key to helping especially our struggling readers move past one-syllable words to multisyllable words.
Some affixes are so common, however, that it even makes sense to give our learners resources for spelling them before they can read them. Think about the prefix re– or un-. These are SO commonly used that our learners can be taught these early on. I would argue that the inflected endings –ed and -ing are the same way.
I created this chart because I wanted my daughter to have a resource she could peek at to help her spell the most common prefixes and suffixes with more independence.
This allows me to focus on helping my fifth grader understand how decimals and fractions are related {I need no interruptions myself just to have enough brain cells to teach this} instead of spelling every affix my younger daughter needs while she’s writing her story.
Included in the free printable is a simple chart with 20+ different prefixes and suffixes learners can use as a “cheat sheet” for spelling or reading. It comes in color {green for the prefixes & red for the suffixes} as well as in a blackline format.
If your learners struggle to remember what prefix or suffix even means, you’ll love our free Word Parts Visual with a train!
