So far this school year, ALuv {currently 2nd grade} has been studying the vowel patterns of a that don’t have the short a sound (such as AR, AW, AL, or WA), comparing them to words with the short a sound.
I created this apple-themed word sort called Bad Apples for him. It contains short a patterned words such as glad, trash, and stack {with the short a sound}. But watch out for the “bad” apples! Mixed among the “good” apples are words that contain patterns that might look like they would make the short a sound, but they don’t (words like small, crawl, or start)! {If you’re teaching younger kids, don’t miss the free Apple PreK/K Pack that was just released as well!}
